The World Health Organization (WHO) assigns International Nonproprietary Names (INN) to pharmaceutical substances. Now, WHO has published its novel nomenclature initiative for ATMPs, setting international standards for naming cell and -gene products to improve regulation and communication around these transformative treatments. Advanced therapy medicinal products cannot be defined by such chemical nomenclature. Instead, they are published together with a textual definition paragraph to unambiguously describe their characteristics. These definitions contribute to pharmacovigilance and patient safety.
